The Path of Ascension

Book 5 Recap· Released December 13, 2023

TL;DR

Matt, Liz and Aster are Tier 10, which means the Pather tournament. For the first time they face people as strong as them, and with years of Luna's guidance they must compete twice: once as themselves and again under masks with restrictions meant to prove they really are the strongest.

I · The Main Plot

Where We Start

The team has reached Tier 10 and entered the Pather tournament, with Luna as manager (blurb).

Major Plot Points & Spoilers

Matt, Liz and others join a gaggle of teams for multi-team rift delves ahead of the tournament (Ch 4) and meet the masked Pathers 'Quill' and 'Torch' in the Top 10 lounge (Ch 6). The blurb's second, masked round implies these are the team's masked identities, but the wiki excerpts do not state it outright.
Aster leads a group of around 400 bonds around East Flower (Ch 17), and an elder water dragon chaperones the hatchling Azure (Ch 20).
The tournament has crafting and alchemy competitions as well as combat. Quill and Torch interact with judges and legacy teachers (Ch 23-26) and with a Pather Auction (Ch 27).
Managers are chosen for several Pathers (Ch 28-30). Matt and Liz fight their first tournament team in Ch 30, and the wiki follows other competitors through Ch 35, where Kyle takes 43rd place.
The wiki records the Gem Trio (Emerald Blade, Sapphire Shield and Ruby Wand) among rivals (Ch 5).

Where the Book Leaves Off

Book 5 is built around the Pather tournament at Tier 10, in which Matt, Liz and Aster compete once unmasked and once as Quill and Torch. The last chapters our sources record (Ch 38) cover a crafter with a stained-glass blade rather than the closing results. Their final standings and any Tier 10 rewards are not verified, so how the tournament concludes is left open here.

Canon Notes

Quality-gate note (2026-10-18): the request described Book 5 as ending with the Minkalla realm trial and Tier 10 advancements. Our sources show Book 5 as the Pather tournament, and the Book 8 blurb has the team leaving Minkalla only at that book's start, so no Minkalla trial is attributed to Book 5. A web search found no source for the Book 5 ending, so no ending or rewards were written as fact.
Which of the masked identities belongs to whom is not stated in the cached excerpts, and the team's final standing is not stated either.
Series cap audit (2026-10-18): 12 numbered volumes are published and 'The Path of Ascension 13' is listed as upcoming (Feb 17, 2027) on Risingshadow only. Risingshadow's series page and BookSeriesInOrder both list Books 1-12 with publication years matching the dates used here (BookSeriesInOrder gives years only); BookSeriesInOrder also lists an unnumbered 'Book 10.5' (2026), which we did not verify and did not cover. Amazon's live listing could not be fetched (HTTP 503), so no retailer listing was read: the exact day-level release date is single-sourced to Risingshadow.
No Kindle ASIN is set: Amazon's own listing was unreachable and neither Risingshadow nor BookSeriesInOrder exposes a /dp/ link (only search links), so the ASIN could not be confirmed against a second source. The site falls back to a tagged Amazon search.
Plot detail comes from the Risingshadow/Amazon-style blurb for this volume plus the EmpireNet fandom wiki's chapter-tagged minor-character entries (cached locally). It is not a read-through of the text, so unconfirmed specifics (exact Tier, final-chapter events, who a title belongs to) are marked unverified rather than filled from memory. The wiki's chapter numbers are cited as 'Ch N' and may use a different numbering scheme than the book's own.
The cached wiki lists the protagonist as Matthew Alexander ('Matt'); the site's character directory entry is 'Matt Waters'. We use 'Matt' and did not reconcile the surnames.
