The Hook & Setting
Setting: The planet Lilly, where rifts spawn monsters and a rift break can destroy a city. Rifts are graded by Tier, and delvers climb the Tiers.
Tone: LitRPG progression with an underdog orphan. Early chapters mix inn work, guild politics and rift delving.
System premise: Every character has a rated Talent, and the hero's is rated detrimental, so no guild will take him. He joins the Path of Ascension, an empire-wide race up the Tiers.
The Magic System at a Glance
Power comes from Talents, Skills and Tiers. Rifts are the main source of loot, mana and advancement.

- Tiers: the rank ladder that gates rifts, gear and the Path
- Concentration potions and a Personal AI scanned at each Tier

I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Matt is a teenage orphan on the planet Lilly, working at Benny's inn between some Tier 3 rifts. His Talent was rated detrimental, so the guild contract a contact had arranged for him fell through and no group will take him (wiki: Book 1 Ch 1-2). His parents died in a rift break when he was eight, and he has since grown up in a Warrington orphanage.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Matt gets his Cracked Phantom Armor Skill while helping a grumpy old Tier 4 drunk to his room during a bar fight at the inn (Ch 2), a Skill that plays into the blurb's 'stolen skill' (the wiki does not spell out the link), and the mysterious couple offer him a place on the Path.
- He joins the Path alongside other recruits (Ch 4), buys basic gear and picks up a trainer at the Path's play pen. The wiki also records a visit to TrueMind, where he arranges a Personal AI deal with scans of his AI at each Tier (Ch 11).
- On the Dual Stars guild's training world he meets Elizabeth 'Liz' Moore (wiki: met in chapter 15). Matt and Liz sell mana to the guild for VIP status and a teleport of their choice (Ch 13), run early rifts, appraise and auction their finds (Ch 19-20), and win duels, including one against a guild member who destroys Matt's sword and loses to his bare fists (Ch 21).
- Matt, Liz and Aster, the bonded companion Matt won as a Rift Challenge prize, fight in an Empire-versus-Republic battle on the training world (Ch 34) and stay with a phoenix-bonded host named Travis, who is mentioned alongside the ascender Dominic (Ch 39-40).
- A guild in a vassal kingdom forces Matt and Liz into slavery, and a duke is assigned to investigate (Ch 47). This is the last Book 1 event our sources record.
Where the Book Leaves Off
By the last recorded events Matt, Liz and Aster are already on the Path, and a vassal-kingdom guild has forced Matt and Liz into slavery. A duke is assigned to investigate that guild (Ch 47), which is the final Book 1 event our sources record. The wiki ties Duke Waters to Camilla's rescue, but no source we read confirms that he sponsors Matt and Liz or that the lower-tier rifts are completed on the last page. The exact final-chapter beat remains unverified.
II · Characters & Personal Progression
Romantic & Personal Status
Matt and Liz meet on the training world in this book and the wiki puts the start of their dating at chapter 44, which falls inside the Book 1 entries. Matt also spends a night with another cultivator after the training-world battle (Ch 35), which annoys Aster, and has a casual exclusive-for-the-duration girlfriend at the play pen (Ch 9). We could not verify whether the Matt/Liz relationship is formally labelled exclusive by the end of the book.
Inner Circle Check-In
- Elizabeth 'Liz' Moore: Matt's partner on the Path from the training world onward. The wiki gives her red hair and bright yellow eyes. Her rank and abilities at the end of Book 1 are not verified.
- Aster: Matt's Arctic Fox (ice fox) bond, the prize of a Rift Challenge. She insists on being held during teleports and loves ice cream (wiki trivia).
- Camilla: Appears as a travelling companion at the end of the book's wiki entries (Ch 44 suite). Her exact status in Book 1 is unverified.
Key New Faces & Factions
A duke who killed an abusive noble at the request of the girls he tortured (Ch 10). Later wiki entries tie him to Camilla's rescue; his link to Liz is not verified for this volume.
Leaders of the Dual Stars guild, which owns the training world gifted by the Empire (Ch 13).
Recommend Matt for the Path. Names are not verified in our sources.
III · End-of-Book Stats & Power Gains
Current Rank / Grade
Roughly Tier 5. The wiki places Matt at Tier 5 when he meets a TrueMind employee in Ch 45. Liz's and Aster's Tiers are not verified.
Dao / Path / Class Evolution
Matt begins the Path of Ascension on a dead-end Talent: it is rated detrimental, so he cannot cultivate mana and must use concentration potions, but it lets him pour all his essence into physical cultivation. Class and concept names for Book 1 are not verified.
Major Skill & Body Gains
- Cracked Phantom Armor, a channelled defensive Skill (Ch 2).
- A Personal AI from TrueMind, with an arrangement to rescan it at each Tier (Ch 11).
- Early rifts, mana sales and a VIP arrangement with the Dual Stars guild (Ch 13).
IV · Extras: Empire, Gear & World State
Territory & Faction Upgrades
None. Matt and Liz are solo Pathers staying at a training world and with a host.
Signature Gear & Vessels
- Cracked Phantom Armor (Skill, not an item).
- A heavy longsword bought at the play pen, later destroyed in a duel (Ch 4, Ch 21).
Ticking Clocks
- The investigation into the guild that enslaved Matt and Liz and the vassal kingdom behind it.
- The Path itself, a race with a time limit, with Matt starting well behind in talent.
- Matt's detrimental Talent: he cannot raise mana normally, so every Tier needs concentration potions.
