Before You Dive In
The Hook & Setting
Setting: A far-future military academy, the Galens Institute, run by the Collective.
Tone: Gritty military sci-fi with an underdog cadet, heavy on training and combat.
System premise: Combat Assistance Devices (CADs) grant genetic correction and stats; the protagonist's CAD has the worst possible stats except an S-rank Growth.
The Magic System at a Glance
There is no magic as such. Power comes from CADs, devices with stats and a type, that boost fighters; the protagonist's Growth stat is what sets him apart.
- CADs: devices that grant genetic correction and combat stats
- Stats with letter ranks, including Growth
- CAD types (the protagonist's is an A-type, a weapon-combat type)
- Training and sparring as the main way to improve
Commitment & Pacing
- Status: Ongoing, slow release.
- Total volumes: 2 published (Oct 15, 2020 and Oct 31, 2023); Book 3 has no verified date.
- Pacing: Book 1 spends most of its length at the academy, building to a tournament. The long gap between Books 2 and 3 matters if you hate waiting.
