Book 1 Recap· Released

TL;DR

Reidon Ward, an orphaned ward of the state with a rare bone disease, earns a Combat Assistance Device (CAD) with the worst possible stats, save for a maxed-out Growth stat. He enters the Galens Institute at the bottom of his class, fights hostile cadets and officers, trains until he can keep up, and ends the book in the school's Intra-School tournament.

I · The Main Plot

Where We Start

Rei is a scrawny, scarred orphan (a 'Ward' of the state) who has had weekly surgeries for most of his life to hold off a rare bone disease. He has just earned a CAD, which grants genetic correction. Its stats are the lowest they can go, except Growth, which is S-rank, the highest. He enters the Galens Institute, one of the Collective's top military academies, ranked at the bottom of his class. His best friend there is Viviana 'Viv' Arada.

Major Plot Points & Spoilers

  1. The CAD assignment: Rei's stats sit at the human baseline with an S-rank Growth. Everyone who learns of it warns him to be very careful about who he tells. An AI called the MIND, which governs humanity, has taken an interest in him (per the official blurb).
  2. Galens split into two camps. Many cadets, and some instructors, resent the weakest cadet at a top school and tell him he does not belong. Some officers who know his potential, among them Major Dyrk Reese, antagonize him, while Colonel Guest and Captain Valera Dent are exasperated by this.
  3. Rei makes up for weak stats with tricky tactics. In his first fight with Aria, a red-haired, green-eyed cadet who is the academy commander's niece, he blinds her with a thrown hat and tricks her with a discarded cloak. Logan Grant despises him for these methods, thinking him a coward who will get people killed.
  4. Rei is confined to the brig. Aria, realising Reese will never approve a sparring partner, goes to her uncle for permission. Rei then spends roughly 16 hours in nonstop training against Christopher 'Lasher' Lennon, the school's Ace, 'dying' about 20 times in about four hours.
  5. The best first-years are allowed to form squads. Aria becomes a squad leader and picks Rei, Viv, Catcher, Cashe and Logan.
  6. The last third of the book is the Intra-School tournament, which decides who represents Galens at Sectionals. Rei wins his first loser's-bracket match against Warren with a single strike to her femoral artery, and beats Logan by letting Logan's axe cut into him so he can sever Logan's hands, then holding the axe in place to avoid bleeding out. Logan later admits that Rei has what it takes.

Where the Book Leaves Off

The sources we could reach do not give a chapter-level ending. What is confirmed is that the Intra-School tournament fills the last third of the book and that the cast then moves into the Sectionals, the main event of Book 2. We could not verify the tournament's final bracket result or the last scene.

II · Characters & Personal Progression

Romantic & Personal Status

No romance is confirmed by our sources. One review notes Viv has a crush on an early bully, but that is a reader's claim and we could not verify who it concerns. Cashe also accuses Rei of nepotism, then is mortified to learn he is an orphan.

Inner Circle Check-In

  • Viviana 'Viv' Arada: Rei's best friend and a fellow cadet from a well-connected family. Joins Aria's squad.
  • Aria: Red-haired, green-eyed top cadet, niece of the academy's commanding officer. First opponent, then squad leader who takes Rei into her squad. Her surname is not given in our sources.
  • Catcher and Cashe: Squad members chosen by Aria. Cashe at first suspects Rei of nepotism. Beyond that, their roles in this volume are not verified.
  • Logan Grant: Starts as a hostile rival who despises Rei's tactics. Rei beats him in the tournament, after which Logan admits Rei is capable. He ends in Aria's squad.

Key New Faces & Factions

Captain Valera Dentally

An A-type CAD user and instructor who tells Rei he needs to get stronger. Exasperated at how much the others bully him.

Colonel Guestally

Officer who sees how much the baiting of Rei backfires. Little else is verified.

Major Dyrk Reeseenemy

Officer who repeatedly yells at Rei, reportedly even for things others did, and claims he must not be allowed to become a monster.

Christopher 'Lasher' Lennonally

The school's Ace, who wields A-type whip-blades. Spars with Rei in his 16-hour training.

The MINDunknown

The AI that governs humanity and has noticed Rei. Its intentions are not described in our sources.

III · End-of-Book Stats & Power Gains

Current Rank / Grade

Cadet at Galens Institute with a CAD whose stats are at baseline, except an S-rank Growth. Rei's rank or level at the end of the book is not verified.

Dao / Path / Class Evolution

Rei's CAD is of the A-type (like Dent and the Lasher), a class tied to weapon-based combat. The sources describe him developing a unique ability that shifts his CAD's form, 'Type Shift', but they do not say in which volume it appears, so we cannot confirm it for Book 1.

Major Skill & Body Gains

  • Genetic correction from the CAD, which ends the effects of his disease (the premise of the book).
  • Wolverine Claws, used in the tournament to open Warren's femoral artery.
  • Combat skills from the Lasher training. How much of the later ability growth comes from it is unverified.

IV · Extras: Empire, Gear & World State

Territory & Faction Upgrades

No territory. Rei is a first-year cadet; his place is in Galens, in Aria's squad.

Signature Gear & Vessels

  • His CAD, a weapon-and-armor system that grows with its user. Its name is not given in the Book 1 material we found.
  • A sword and the Wolverine Claws ability.

Ticking Clocks

  • Sectionals, the next tier of tournament, awaits Galens' representatives.
  • Powerful figures have noticed Rei, and Reese-style officers keep pushing against him.
