TL;DR
Matt, Liz and Aster, fresh from a planet-wide reckoning with golems and a flying rift, are sucked into the vassal war between two rival kingdoms who want to join the Empire proper. The Path of Ascension offers them a chance to pick a side, fight for experience, and win glory, prizes and power, with a kingdom's survival on the line.

I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Matt, Liz and Aster have just been caught up in the vassal war between two rival kingdoms seeking approval to join the Empire. The wiki shows the sides as the Kingdom of the Seven Suns and the Alliance of Allied Queens ('the Queendom'), and Matt's team starts out fighting for the Kingdom.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Matt mans a Pather Union desk during the war (Ch 14) and deals with the Empire's Deep Sky Auctions representative (Ch 7).
- Matt's team takes a base from Queendom archers and a Tier 6 gold mine (Ch 9, Ch 21), and the Kingdom side suffers a botched first fort assault that angers Pathers (Ch 12).
- Liz has a nightmare about her past (Ch 13), and the team hires a trainer who has placed in Empire sword competitions (Ch 22).
- A Kingdom offensive led by a duke's son ends in a mana-cannon ambush that kills the leader and his adviser; Liz backs another adviser, Olivia, over Alyssa, and Olivia takes the city and is awarded a barony (Ch 23).
- Matt duels and kills Talous after the man insults his parents (Ch 25-27) and talks to a healer afterward. He takes over the Kingdom-side forces, executing spies (Ch 28-29). A Queendom member kills a loyalist marquess and marchioness (Ch 30).
Where the Book Leaves Off
The wiki's last Book 3 entries cover the meeting of two Alliance queens, Milly and Verona, and the killing of the Kingdom loyalists (Ch 30). The final chapter and the war's outcome are not verified.
II · Characters & Personal Progression
Romantic & Personal Status
Liz is in a nightmare chapter (Ch 13) revealing earlier-life details such as a neighbour and a hairdresser, which is characterisation, not a romantic event. Matt and Liz remain a pair. No new romance is verified.
Inner Circle Check-In
- Elizabeth 'Liz' Moore: Backs Olivia's takeover of the offensive and has a nightmare chapter (Ch 13, Ch 23).
- Aster: Joins a bond play group during the war (Ch 20) and takes out a 'wannabe hivemind' enemy that Luna calls a counter to Liz (Ch 11).
- Camilla: Her whereabouts in Book 3 are not verified in our sources.

The wiki mentions her in Ch 11 as someone whose earliest successes inspired comparison, but whether she appears in Book 3 or only in the blurb of Book 4 is not verified here.
