I · The Main Plot

Where We Start

Carl and Donut arrive on Floor 4 with bounties on their heads after making the top-ten crawler list. The Iron Tangle's layout lets crawler groups meet for the first time.

Major Plot Points & Spoilers

  1. The Iron Tangle is a subway built from transit systems of different worlds and times. Up and down feel reversed and exits stay out of reach, and Carl has about eight days to escape.
  2. Carl wins the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, a seemingly useless book of information written by previous crawlers that holds what he needs to advance. Mordecai is temporarily removed after attacking the Prize Carousel host Chaco.
  3. Hekla and Brynhild's Daughters ask the Royal Court to help rescue at least a thousand crawlers trapped near station 101. Hekla secretly shoots Katia with bolts that hide wounds and cause amnesia.
  4. Eva admits Katia was targeted to provoke Carl into a fight. Katia uses her Rush ability, misses Eva, and kills Hekla instead, earning a 500,000-gold bounty and jumping to level 37 (single source).
  5. Hekla's death shatters Brynhild's Daughters. Eva vows revenge, and Katia takes Hekla's crossbow.
  6. Carl takes command of the packed train, crawlers donate hundreds of portal hats and keys, and he helps rescue more than 1,400 stranded crawlers.
  7. Carl uses the subway puzzle and Grull's summoning rules to break the final crisis. Wikipedia's summary says he summons a god sponsored by Maestro to defeat the floor's boss.

Where the Book Leaves Off

Carl stands at the door to the Air Quadrant of Floor 5 rather than entering it. Silfa supplies evidence consistent with Carl's belief that the confrontation was staged as an excuse to kill him.
