I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Aboard the Aurelius cloudship headed for Serpent's Grave, with a year to prepare for the duel with Jai Long. Fisher Gesha has changed her mind and comes along as Lindon's soulsmithing tutor. Elsewhere Jai Long and the Sandvipers' new leader Gokren are waging a guerrilla war on the Jai clan.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Eithan teaches Lindon the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel to grow his cores and fights with Yerin over her master's Remnant, which she insists still has his voice.
- In Serpent's Grave, a city carved from dragon bones, Lindon chooses the Path of the Blackflame and bonds his spirit to Orthos, a mad turtle descended from dragons and the last Blackflame practitioner. This advances Lindon to Jade.
- Eithan restores the three Trials of the Blackflame (Enforcer, Striker, Ruler). Lindon and Yerin clear the first two with help from the Sylvan Riverseed, which Eithan has changed. Yerin nicknames her Little Blue and she can heal Lindon's channels from Blackflame damage.
- Jai Daishou, the Jai patriarch, forces Jai Long to swear a soul oath as stopgap heir and launches a coup that kills Aurelius members across the city. Eithan reveals his pure madra path and kills Daishou, who survives via a one-time death-cheat relic.
- Orthos goes mad again. Yerin destroys the Remnant she absorbed and advances to Highgold; Lindon advances to Lowgold. They fight off Jai Long and Gokren. Lindon heals Jai Chen's damaged core and asks her to tell Jai Long he doesn't want to fight.
Where the Book Leaves Off
A patrolling Skysworn of the Blackflame Empire arrests Lindon because learning the Blackflame is considered a threat. Eithan asks the Emperor not to release Lindon but to make him fight. In the cosmic thread Suriel finds a message from Ozriel and over a million people he placed in stasis.
