TL;DR
Lindon is born Unsouled in Sacred Valley's Wei clan, unable to practice the sacred arts. A visit from the Abidan Judge Suriel shows him that a Dreadgod will one day destroy his home, so he teams up with Yerin, the disciple of a murdered sage, and fights his way out of the valley.

I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Sacred Valley, where the children of the Wei clan are tested on their madra. The test water does not react for Lindon, so he is declared Unsouled (a soul with no affinity) and is stuck at Foundation, the lowest stage. He is desperate to strengthen his soul and hunts a spirit fruit from the clan's ancestral tree.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Lindon steals the spirit fruit from the ancestral tree's Remnant after a clansman, Teris, panics, then splits the fruit with his sister Kelsa. The First Elder punishes him by sending him to feed Elder Whisper, the clan's fox guardian.
- To beat a challenger from Teris's family, Lindon finds the Heart of Twin Stars technique (splitting a madra core in two) and develops his own version of the Empty Palm with Kelsa.
- At the inter-clan exhibition, the Abidan Suriel (searching for a man named Ozriel) steps in when an off-world ancestor, Li Markuth, attacks. She rolls time back so the deaths never happen, but first shows Lindon his future: a Dreadgod destroys Sacred Valley in his old age. She points him to Yerin as his way out and leaves him a marble token.
- Lindon bluffs his way into Heaven's Glory school as a disciple, then joins Yerin, whose master the Sword Sage was poisoned by the school. They raid the lesser treasure hall and take a parasite ring, a thousand mile cloud and a sylvan riverseed.
- Fighting the Sword Sage's Remnant in the ancestors' tomb, Lindon is cornered by a Jade Elder. He splits his core with the Heart of Twin Stars, kills the Elder by dragging him off a cliff, and Yerin absorbs the Remnant and advances to Gold.
Where the Book Leaves Off
Lindon and Yerin escape Sacred Valley on the thousand mile cloud. Heaven's Glory, assuming they went home, marches on the Wei clan. The epilogue shows Suriel and the Abidan Gadrael watching a corrupted world destroy another and noting that without Ozriel and his Scythe they cannot stop it.
