I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Zac has survived the Imperial Graveyard and a betrayal. The Kan'Tanu leader is dead, the Eternal Guardians have been unleashed on the cult, and he starts the book wounded, exhausted and with damaged foundations.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- The competition for the Ultom Courts begins, and the trial turns out to be more complicated than it first appears. Old plans clash with new ambitions as past and present collide.
- Zac spends the early book repairing the foundations he damaged at the end of Book 15. He sustains a major injury, heals, grows stronger, and gains new Dao insight.
- He enters the Left Imperial Expanse, a hidden region of the Limitless Empire, and learns its purpose. It is tied to a river of time and to a trial for the Fifth Pillar.
- The Pre-Trials play out as memory domains of the past. Zac uses Chaos to alter what happened in them, which strengthens the Imperial Faith. He moves from one scenario to the next.
- He works on tempering his body, soul and heart, and on cultivating skills across both bodies and both tool spirits. The narrative shifts between his Human and Draugr bodies without clear markers, and some scenes are illusions.
- Worldbuilding expands on Imperial Chalise, Imperial Faith, Imperial Qi, the nine seals, eight thrones, four laws and the Outer Regions. The wiki ties the Hollow Court to the Lower Planes and Inverse Peak (Ch 1,302 and 1,316) and the Mercurial Court to the Peak of Continuum (Ch 1,316).
- The Limitless Empire's remnants appear to be trying to return to the world stage, and a 'lantern' setup is introduced but not resolved. Lower Ultom Courts have margraves.
- Reviewers note Alea receives an upgrade, Ogras follows Zac through the trial, Emily has a small role, and Thea Marshall appears briefly, with a Vilari and Thea scene singled out as a highlight.
Where the Book Leaves Off
The book stops partway through the Ultom trial. Reviewers call it a pause rather than a conclusion, and the story carries straight into Book 17 inside the Left Imperial Expanse.

III · End-of-Book Stats & Power Gains
Current Rank / Grade
Last wiki-confirmed grade is Middle D-grade (Hegemon), level 175 at Ch 1,184. His exact grade and level at the end of Book 16 are not confirmed.
Dao / Path / Class Evolution
Zac spends a large share of the book on Dao insights and on tempering body, soul and heart. Reviewers report heart cultivation is unlocked. The wiki's Dao list currently reads Defiant War, Reborn Life and Sealed Death at Middle, but that page includes chapters past Book 16, so we do not assign it to this book.

- Repaired foundations and new Dao insight after a major injury.
- Body, soul and heart tempering in both bodies.
- Tool spirit cultivation, including Alea's upgrade.
- D-grade skills including Arcadian Crusade (Ch 1,292), Empyrean Aegis (Ch 1,304) and Evolutionary Edge (Ch 1,305).
