He is betrayed, makes powerful enemies and allies, awakens his Void Emperor bloodline to E-grade in the Twilight Chasm, and turns his Axe, Coffin and Bodhi Fragments to Peak. He finishes the book as a level 120 monster who has caught the eye of the Twilight Lord.

I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Zac and Catheya have just agreed an arrangement for the Twilight Ascent, a once-in-a-millennium trial held in the Twilight Ocean. He arrives as Arcaz Black, his Draugr persona, and is facing six months of preparation before the gates open.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Zac attends an auction in Twilight Harbor where Va Tapek helps Catheya, and gains several upgrades before the trial. His Draugr race is now D-grade (status sheet Book 8 Ch 9).
- He enters the Twilight Ocean, a System-controlled Mystic Realm made from two fused inner worlds. The trial rewards contributions to the Tapestry of Twilight, mostly through Life and Death Dao breakthroughs or by releasing trapped Dao. Fate-Plucking Ladder rewards are handed out by the Twilight Council.
- In the Twilight Chasm Zac awakens the Void Emperor bloodline to E-grade, with a vision of Karz, the Void Emperor's lineage.
- Catheya's group is betrayed and forcibly split. On the run Zac reaches level 105 Human and 109 Draugr and escapes with Catheya, who learns he is also Human. They deal with the traitor and finish their assigned missions.
- Zac meets Uona Noz'Valadir of the Eternal Clan, a peak E-grade blood warrior who is strong enough to pressure him, and Ventus Kalavan, an elf from the Radiant Temple who agrees to help him later.
- Catheya teaches Zac how to raise undead, upgrade skills and evolve bloodlines, except for Draugr bloodline methods. He travels to the Life-Death Pearls with Catheya.
- Fragments of the Coffin and Bodhi reach Peak, and the Axe Fragment too. Zac manually evolves Profane Seal into Pillar of Desolation, his first Supreme-quality skill at E-grade, earning the title Runebinder. His level reaches 114 Human and 120 Draugr.
- He spends about eight months in a cultivation cave. The Eveningtide Asura (Alvod Jondir), who is secretly the Twilight Lord, finds him and forces a System-enforced quest to stop his adversaries. Zac forms the Dao Branch of the War Axe (Ch 748), earning Runic Erudition and Grand Fate.
- Zac absorbs a second Shard of Creation (Ch 759). Vilari is appointed general of the coming Incursion for Ensolus.
Where the Book Leaves Off
The Twilight Ascent has not finished. Zac holds a second Shard of Creation, his bloodline is E-grade, and the Twilight Lord has marked him for his own plans. The final stretch happens in Book 9.

Catheya flirts with Zac openly and teases him, even calling herself half his master. Zac stays guarded and focuses on the trial. Alea lives on as Love's Bond, which he feeds and trains.
