I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
The surface of this world is frozen, with sub-zero temperatures and ancient ruins scattered across wastes of ice. Humanity survives as a pseudo-medieval society, and the only escape from the cold is underground. Keith Winterscar joins an expedition into the unmapped far north, per the Risingshadow, Goodreads and Audible blurbs.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- The expedition goes disastrously wrong and traps Keith and his father together. The blurb says they must set aside their differences to survive, so the father and son relationship is the emotional spine of the book.
- Underground, monstrous machines roam the depths, and immortal warriors fight them again and again as if it were a game. The landscape shifts over time and behaves more like machinery than rock.
- Keith uncovers an ancient war of enormous scale and faces gods, legends and the secrets of the realm below. A prophecy says the answer to everything lies on the deepest level, which no one has yet reached.
- The title refers to the depth the story is built around: twelve miles down.
Where the Book Leaves Off
The blurb gives no final-chapter detail, so the exact cliffhanger is not stated here. The Book 2 blurb opens with a raider horde and a clan under threat, so the series moves from this opening expedition into a clan-scale war. Read the next volume, A House Reborn, to see how Keith's situation develops.
II · Characters & Personal Progression
Romantic & Personal Status
Keith's strongest relationship in this opening volume is with his father, who is trapped with him. No romance is mentioned in the blurbs.

Key New Faces & Factions
Fighters who battle the underground machines again and again as though it were a game, per the Goodreads blurb.
