I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Team Biscuit and Rufus's team are on a multi-team road contract when they find a fortress town whose essence users were suborned by the Order of Redeeming Light while its normal-rank people were slaughtered.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- The Order's Flames of Redemption ritual turns people into fanatically loyal 'Pure converted' and even strips a Builder clockwork king of its master's influence. In the ruins of a Builder city island, an aura bomb masks the Order's attempt to capture clockwork kings. Jason and Humphrey take apart a beacon in Jason's spirit realm, and the Order escapes through a portal arranged by Killian Laurent's brother.
- The Order raids the undersea mine of Gibson Amouze's family. Callum Morse reveals that Melody Jayne leads the Order, and Jason leads the assault. After a flood, Jason fights and captures Melody. Besieged in a shelter, he supercharges his portal with part of an Earth reality core, which saves everyone but starts breaking down his gestalt body and soul. His team and Gordon fight to drain the power while Belinda and Shade sink the Order's submarines.
- A weakened Jason learns from Carlos Quillado that the 'purifying flames' are a variant of a lesser vampire curse, meaning the 'Purity' everyone worships has been replaced by a deception god. Carlos asks to experiment on Jason to harm messengers, and Jason throws him against a wall with his aura.
- Jason's system logs show the Builder door and World-Phoenix bridge have been broken down for parts. His soul has an Astral Throne, Astral Gate, a Firmamental Bridge Anchor and an Authority token. Colin and Gordon bind themselves to him permanently; Shade does not. Jason trades the Authority token to the Builder, who withdraws all forces from Pallimustus that day and will send help opening a door to the fundamental realm.
- Dominion confirms Purity has been replaced and the Builder's forces withdraw. Dawn explains that the messengers' Astral Kings are beings whose bodies and souls have become universes, and that Jason is a nascent Astral King who needs a Soul Forge to finish. His soul space is now an island-sized physical space he fully controls, where he can create anything, including a rude talking rabbit pulled from a top hat.
Where the Book Leaves Off
After a final night in Jason's soul realm, Dawn says goodbye to Jason and Farrah, promises to return once the bridge to Earth is completed, and leaves Pallimustus to seek transcendence. Jason is recovering from soul trauma, the Builder's forces are gone from Pallimustus, and he has learned he is a nascent Astral King who still lacks a Soul Forge.
