I · The Main Plot
Where We Start
Greenstone is reeling from the astral-space disaster. Because Jason finished the contract to catch the thief, Greenstone law lets him take Sophie as an indentured servant, but he knows that is a flimsy shield.
Major Plot Points & Spoilers
- Jason offers Sophie and Belinda a choice: portal away to start over, or take essences and awakening stones so Sophie can become an Adventurer with the Society's protection. He threatens to expose Director Arella's corruption if she interferes at the indenture hearing. After the Continental Council reviews the failed expedition, sweeping demotions drop Jason to one star.
- Clive's simulation shows the cyborg army was trying to rip the aquatic astral space off the side of reality, which only the Builder would want. Archbishop Nicolas Hendren removes a star seed from Jonah Gellar and kills him in the process. Jason recruits Neil Davone, joining Humphrey, Clive and Sophie in the team he is forming.
- Emir Bahadir's contest sends young iron-rank elites from around the world into an astral space once sealed by the Order of the Reaper. Builder cultists ambush Jason and Sophie as bait, and Jason loots an intact star seed, which Anisa Lasalle then claims for the Church of Purity at the request of the cultist Timos.
- Inside the Reaper Trials, Jason and Sophie face vorger, a bloodroot vine and a nightmare hag, and Jason refuses to execute the captive priests, freeing them instead. He deduces the trials are a ruse hiding that the Order still exists. Shade lets him take the real Reaper's Scythe, winning the contest and a racial-gift evolution that lets shadow familiars take vehicle forms.
- Afterward, several gods thank Jason for freeing their priests, though Purity excommunicates his. Jason summons new familiars (Shade and the Avatar of Doom he names Gordon), and Belinda gets a full set of essences and joins the team. Thadwick is recaptured, loses his star seed, then talks Timos into giving him another.
Where the Book Leaves Off
The book ends with a strike force of visiting gold-rankers, assembled after Rufus and the crime boss Dorgan trace the Builder cult to an island, assaulting the cultists' camp, where Church of Purity priests are also hiding. Thadwick Mercer has taken a new star seed from Timos and disappeared, while his mother turns the city over looking for him. Jason's team now includes Sophie, Neil and Belinda, and he has Shade and Gordon as familiars.
